As Sunbathers Fled Violence, Viral Picture Captures Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned coast as her personal space. On that particular Sunday evening, she, similar to other neighbors, detected pops ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” she explains. Exiting her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the street, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the hill still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one running in the path that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He moved into something that surely every instinct would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort running.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The photo that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics attending to many victims.

Community Response and Support

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the patrol base beside the scene of the incident serving as a makeshift hospital. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen helping out, for instance going into the water to assist people needing help.

In the days after the tragedy, comments of appreciation were shared. A social media message expressed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “kindness will always conquer darkness”.

The team of rescuers later shared a communication, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind sentiments and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion shown towards our responders,” the group commented. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it helps those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many full-time beach safety officers, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the second the shooting started right into late that night.

“We have heard so many emotional accounts, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a council representative.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in keeping our iconic coastlines safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have witnessed in the face of such darkness.”
