Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
